love and guidance. Joy always thought of others, even in her toughest moments.
To honor her memory and the anniversary of her loss, Joy's sister Star raffled off a quilt to raise money to donate to efforts fighting cancer. From there, she started fundraising and participating in Susan G. Komen "Race for the cure" and other cancer fundraisers. Since 2006, others have joined in and walked with Star and helped to raise money for the causes. Early on, the name Team Journey for Joy was coined when registering for the walks.
From the beginning, Team Journey for Joy just wanted to be able to do something that helped those who are struggling. Over the years, we've shared a desire to use the funds we raise to directly help the cancer victims right here, in our own Southern Iowa communities. The creation of the Journey for Joy Foundation, Inc. allows those involved with Team Journey for Joy to focus efforts locally and expand to help victims of all cancer types. We are currently serving cancer families residing in Decatur County, Iowa, or receiving treatment in Decatur County.
On July 15, 2004, Joy Buckingham passed away after a particularly rough battle with breast cancer and the related treatments. She left behind 4 amazing adult children, a large family of siblings, nieces, nephews and friends, and a lasting legacy of
